Summary:

An award-winning Media and Publishing company based in New York and staffed with industry professionals who previously worked at major media companies like Conde Nast, Hearst, Buzzfeed, Bloomberg and other like-companies is seeking a Senior Writer.

The ideal candidate has an advanced degree or certification in nutrition (or a related field), and prior experience covering these topics as a staff writer at a reputable, consumer-facing digital publication. This is not a role suited to an RD who enjoys writing; it’s a role for an experienced writer who has worked in a fast-paced digital media setting and has the expertise required to write authoritatively about a range of topics related to nutrition and health. You must be as comfortable writing about studies related to food and blood sugar as you are writing a roundup of the healthiest frozen dinner options based on nutritional data.

The Senior Writer will be responsible for seeking out, pitching, and producing compelling story angles as well as accepting assignments from our team of best-in-class editors. He/she/they must be able to work quickly and deliver timely news-driven posts, seasonal roundups, and evergreen service stories. This person must be comfortable with the pace of writing 2 to 3 articles a day, working in conjunction with our staff editors and members of our Medical Expert Board.

Responsibilities:

  • Write 2-3 original stories a day, and file clean and well-researched copy with speed, efficiency, voice, and accuracy so that it adheres to the brand’s high editorial standards
  • Develop and implement innovative ideas to grow reach, traffic, and engagement
  • Produce weekly and monthly analytics reports that include thorough takeaways and specific recommendations for future content and tactical improvements
  • Participate in site-, team-, and company-wide initiatives with an eye toward growing all three
  • Meet or exceed monthly traffic and production goals as set forth by EIC and leadership
  • Pursue meaningful connections in your beat to bring new experts, authorities, and business opportunities to the site
  • Own production of all assigned nutrition stories and provide approval of topics; assist with fact-checking of freelance content as needed

Qualifications:

  • Experience working for a competitive digital publisher (preferably in the food/health space) and a strong writing portfolio of prior work in a relevant field
  • A degree or certification in nutrition (or a related field) is preferred; candidates who do not have a specialized degree but do have substantial experience writing about health and nutrition are also encouraged to apply
  • Stellar writing, research, and communication skills, and a passion for accurate and original service and lifestyle journalism
  • A mastery of SEO, E-A-T, reporting best practices, and AP style
  • Experience using WordPress, Photoshop, Google Analytics, Parsley, Google Suite, and Slack; experience with Asana a plus
  • Exceptional punctuality and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple deadlines at once
  • The ability to work from home with fast internet and video conferencing capabilities

Required Notification:  Certain states require that job postings indicate a minimum and maximum base salary in an effort to not discriminate – a very worthwhile purpose that Media Recruiting Group supports. MRG’s practices are and have always been non-discriminatory, and jobs are open to all candidates with respect to race, color, religion, national origin, military status, sexual orientation, sex/gender, age, national origin, disability, etc.  That said, companies require that we supply them with candidates with very specific experience, and the commensurate compensation for every job varies.  It is a function of a person’s years of experience, type of experience, skills, knowledge of certain computer programs, etc.  And every job may have a unique requirement.  And every job could come in higher or lower than the range we are given.   We do not control the upper and lower ranges for our clients, so we make a best efforts attempt to include information requested by said states.  In the case of sales people, most time it is also a function of their contacts.  If the job is an analyst, analytical skills and experience matter.  Etc.  This makes stating a reasonable minimum and maximum challenging absent all of this information about a given candidate.  Companies also have other elements of compensation, including but not limited to, commission, bonus, equity, profit sharing, varying levels of healthcare coverage and how much a person would have to contribute to the premium, various perks like continuing education, commuter reimbursement, phone reimbursement, etc. – not included in “salary” as the law states.  Thus, know that anything we note in a salary range does NOT include such other compensation elements.  And, as recruiters, we don’t know what all of those elements are, as we are recruiting for a company, not for ourselves, and they do not brief us as to each benefit.  We are a 3rd party and can only estimate to the best of our knowledge, and thus offer the minimum and maximum salary MRG in good faith believes at the time of the posting the client is willing to pay for the advertised job.

Qualified by all of the above, for this job with requisite/required  years of the required experience and skills, the minimum and maximum salary is approximated at $60k and $70k respectfully, exclusive of commission, bonus, equity, profit sharing, any element of healthcare coverage, any reference to how much a person would have to contribute to the premium of a healthcare plan, any perks, or other forms of compensation.  Fewer years of experience could bring the base salary lower, and more experience could bring the base salary higher, if the company is willing to increase their salary bands.
